What Do Dogs See When They Look At Your Face? Research Uncovers Findings!

Science Daily

This is something that dog lovers have suspected for centuries but only now do we have a definitive proof that canines can indeed read facial expessions. A study has been conducted that confirms what we dog lovers have been noticing all this time.

A study by the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna in Austria published on Current Biology reveals that dogs can tell whether you’re happy or sad by looking at your face.

There were many other previous studies done on the matter but the results weren’t convincing.

All it takes is half a face
The researchers trained dogs to identify the happy face and sad face of 15 people on photos. They canines were able to distinguish the face the people were making just by looking at half of the faces, whether the upper part or lower part.

“We think the dogs in our study could have solved the task only by applying their knowledge of emotional expressions in humans to the unfamiliar pictures we presented to them,” said Corsin Müller, one of the researchers, in a press release.
